Newsletter Highlights
Service Committee Missions
As part of the Service Committee, our Missions Ministry is always looking for local, world or national human service or social service non-profit organizations for consideration as one of the missions Immanuel supports.
During 2011, we gave our support to Love INC, Solid Grounds, Mill Neck Foundation, Loaves & Fishes, Kalamazoo Deacon's Conference, Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, St. Michael's Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, Crossroads Bible Institute, Ministry with Community, and Grace Children’s Hospital. We also provide ongoing support for LCMS Michigan District. In the past, in addition to monetary support, some of the activities we have participated in included an ongoing collection of food, donations of clothing, serving meals, corresponding with prisoners, organizing and/or participating in fund raising activities, and supporting a Giving Tree.
At this time, the Service Committee is reviewing missions to support in 2012. If anyone is involved with an organization that you would like us to consider, please let a member of the Service Committee know. We would ask that you be willing to write an article for our newsletter about your organization and to perhaps coordinate an activity that would support your organization during the month it is highlighted.
Please contact Brian Long, Christie Sidwell, Linda Swinehart, Gail Kueffner-Haw, or John Wagner with any ideas for a new mission, or leave a note in the Service Committee Box #3 in the office.
We look forward to hearing from you!
The Lutheran Hour

February 5 - "God Is Faithful. Get Busy And Wait On The Lord" We can wait on God-joyfully, expectantly, hopefully-because we can trust Him. (Isaiah 40:28-31)
February 12 - "You Can't Muzzle True Joy" Joy is rooted in a relationship with God. You can't muzzle joy when that joy is connected to Jesus. (Mark 1:40-45)
February 19 - "A Resurrection Glimpse to Empower Your Faith" Can you fathom what it means that it required the sacrifice of God's own Son in order that you might live, forgiven and redeemed? (Mark 9:2-11)
Temple Triathlon
Surely you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you! For God's temple is holy, and you yourselves are His temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
What: "Temple Triathlon" is a six week team competition aimed at developing good habits related to physical activity, eating and developing a closer relationship with the Lord.
Why: We are called to be good stewards of the one body God has given us. The bad news is that we overeat, under move, and don't spend the time we want to in developing a deeper relationship with God. This will be a fun way to develop better habits in these areas.
Who: Teams are four persons. Team members may be related by birth or marriage. For example, a family with a mother, father and one child may include a cousin or aunt on their team. Team members do not need to be related. Team members must be at least five years of age to participate on a team.
When: Starts Sunday, February 13 and ends Saturday, March 24. Winners will be announced on Sunday, March 25.
How: Identify four members to be on your team. Give yourselves a Team Name and appoint a captain. Give Gail Kueffner-Haw the team name and members. She will give the team captain a tracking packet at that time.
Do: Keep track of the numbers of servings of fruit and vegetables, minutes of physical activity, and minutes of spiritual formation activities each day. You may set a personal goal to track, although this will not be tallied for team totals. Turn in your totals to your team captain every week, who will turn the team total in to Gail Kueffner-Haw.
Mission Focus -- Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes
As you are all aware, Immanuel supports a number of missions each year. This year the Service Committee has decided to place special emphasis on a few of those missions. Our first emphasis will be on Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes.
Since 1982, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes (KLF) has been the main charitable source of emergency food for hungry individuals and families in Kalamazoo County. KLF collects and procures food, distributes it, and provides direct service through various efforts like the Grocery Pantry Program. Members from Immanuel currently serve at one of those pantries on a monthly basis.
The food of the month for November is OATMEAL. The collection box is located on the garden level by the coat rack. Thank you!. The collection box is located on the garden level by the coat rack. Thank you!
We encourage you to visit KLF's website at www.kzoolf.org for more information about their organization.

MISSION OF THE MONTH
MINISTRY WITH COMMUNITY
Rebuilding lives means restoring hope, dignity, and self-respect. Rebuilding lives means putting faces on poverty. Rebuilding lives takes daily, face-to-face contact with adults in crisis. The mission of Ministry with Community is to provide food, daytime shelter and other basic services to Kalamazoo's homeless, poor, mentally ill and hard-to-serve adults. Through community cooperation, we provide these services in an atmosphere of dignity, hope and unconditional acceptance.
At Ministry with Community,
It's More Than a Hot Meal
Ministry with Community is a haven in Kalamazoo for people who are hungry, lonely or homeless. Staff and volunteers welcome "members" when they drop in to do their laundry, take a shower, get a haircut, volunteer, pick up their mail, enjoy a cup of coffee, find support for their recovery, seek help in sending for birth records, or simply rest.
The relationships begin to form a positive community for many. Through this community, these people who drop in have also helped to serve meals, clean, unload groceries, make candles and organize social events. These valuable contributions often build self-esteem, positive relations and hope for the future. If you would like to learn more about the many programs at Ministry with Community, or ways you can volunteer, please visit their website at www.ministrywithcommunity.org
